Yes, Lapland gets cold. But 'cold' is only half the story. The Arctic has four dramatically different seasons, each with its own light, mood and magic. A February night at −25 °C under a sky full of auroras feels completely different from a June midnight with the sun still shining warm on your face.
The real question is not whether you can handle the weather. You absolutely can, with the right preparation. The real question is: which season speaks to you?
Average temperatures for central Lapland (Sodankylä area). Northern locations like Inari and Utsjoki may be a few degrees colder. Southern Lapland near Rovaniemi is slightly milder.
In December and January, the sun does not rise above the horizon in northern Lapland. But this is not total darkness. The sky glows in deep blues, purples and pinks for several hours around midday. It is hauntingly beautiful, and the perfect backdrop for the Northern Lights that can appear from afternoon through early morning.
From late May to mid-July, the sun stays above the horizon around the clock. The golden light at 'night' is unlike anything you have experienced. Locals fish at 2 AM, children play outside until midnight, and the energy of endless daylight is infectious. You will need blackout curtains to sleep, but you might not want to.
Aurora Season: late August to early April
The Northern Lights are visible in Lapland from late August to early April, with the best chances between October and February. On a clear night, you might see them 2–3 times per week in peak season. The lights are most active around the autumn and spring equinoxes.
No one can guarantee the aurora. It depends on solar activity, cloud cover and a bit of luck. But Lapland, sitting directly under the auroral oval, gives you the best odds in Europe. Stay at least 3–4 nights to maximise your chances.
The heart of the Arctic experience. Temperatures drop to −15 to −30 °C. The polar night (kaamos) blankets northern Lapland in blue twilight, but this is when the Northern Lights dance most brilliantly across the sky. Snow cover is thick and reliable, perfect for husky safaris, snowmobiling and skiing.

The hidden gem of Lapland seasons. March and April bring long sunny days reflecting off pristine snow. Locals call it 'hankikanto' when the frozen crust lets you walk anywhere. Temperatures climb from −8 to +5 °C. Snow lingers into May while daylight stretches past 18 hours.
Best for: Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, crisp sunny days
The midnight sun never sets above the Arctic Circle from June to mid-July. Temperatures reach a pleasant 12 to 15 °C, occasionally hitting 25. This is the time for hiking, fishing and river rafting. The landscape transforms into an endless green wilderness with wildflowers and berries.

September brings 'ruska', the spectacular autumn foliage that paints the fells in red, orange and gold. The aurora season begins again as nights return. October brings the first snow, and by November the winter wonderland is forming. Temperatures range from +6 down to −8 °C.
Best for: Ruska foliage, first auroras, peaceful landscapes
Reliable snow cover typically lasts from November through May in Lapland. The first snowfall can arrive as early as October, and in the far north patches of snow may linger into June. Peak snow depth is usually in March and April, when up to 80–100 cm blanket the landscape.
